Your No-Surgery Weight Loss Solution? It's Called Orbera

About two-thirds of all adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese, according to data from the National Institutes of Health, and that means all those men and women are at increased risk of serious and even life-threatening health problems. Carrying excess pounds has been linked with a wide array of medical issues, including:

But there is some good news: It is possible to lose those extra pounds and reduce your health-related risks. Often, though, you need more than just dieting and exercise to get results. And that’s where Orbera© comes in.

Also referred to as a gastric balloon, Orbera is a nonsurgical weight-loss alternative that’s designed to help you eat less so you lose weight. Orbera treatment takes a total of 12 months, and during that period, you’ll learn and develop new skills that can help you lose weight and keep it off long term. The Orbera procedure is performed right in our office, without any incisions and without altering your digestive tract. Here’s how it works.

The Orbera procedure

Most of us overeat (and gain weight) because we’re hungry. In fact, that’s why a lot of diets fail. Sure, we may start out eating less. But before we know it, those hunger pangs kick in, and we’re filling up on seconds and thirds, and even indulging in between-meal snacks. As a result, the diet pretty much fails right from the start, and we’re left with feelings of discouragement and failure. Sound familiar?

Weight-loss surgeries help combat those feelings of hunger by making the stomach smaller, permanently or temporarily altering the shape and size of the stomach so it takes less food to make us feel full. The problem is, even if we choose a surgery that’s reversible, it’s still surgery — and that means it comes with risks (not to mention a higher cost). Orbera uses the same sort of idea — limit the amount of available space in your stomach so you feel full faster — but it does it without surgery. Instead, it uses a balloon that’s inserted into your stomach through your mouth. Once the balloon is in place, it’s filled with saline fluid until it’s about the size of a grapefruit.

The Orbera balloon fills a part of your stomach, so when you eat, it takes a lot less food to make you feel full. The procedure takes less than a half hour to perform, and there’s no downtime. Plus, since there are no incisions, there are no scars to worry about. Mild sedation will keep you calm and comfortable while the balloon is being placed and inflated with saline. For a few days after your procedure, your belly might feel distended or mildly uncomfortable, and you might be a bit nauseous. But your body will soon adjust to the balloon, and in the meantime, anti-nausea medication can help.

What happens during treatment

Placing the balloon inside your stomach is the first part of your weight-loss treatment. Once Orbera is in place, we’ll work with you to develop a healthy eating plan that keeps you feeling full while also providing you with the proper nutrition to stay healthy and lose weight. The Orbera balloon provides a sort of “built-in” portion control. You’ll follow that eating plan for six months, while you learn new, healthier habits. Then, the Orbera balloon is removed. Once again, the procedure is performed right in our office without any incisions or downtime.

During the next six months (the second half of your treatment), our team will continue to work with you, giving you the support and guidance you need to maintain those healthy lifestyle and eating habits. Once the entire 12-month treatment period is complete, the skills and techniques you’ve perfected will become almost second nature to you, and you'll be able to implement those new habits and enjoy your healthier lifestyle.
